When heading to Tanzania on a safari, you have a few choices on where to go and what to do. Tanzania and Zanzibar have some fantastic things to do and places to see, such as the Wildebeest Migration and Mt Kilimanjaro. Here are just a few of the routes you could take to see all that the country has to offer.
1. The Northern Circuit safari is the most popular safari route through the country. It tends to go through the Ngorongoro Crater to the Serengeti, the Tarangire, and Lake Manyara. The Serengeti is best during the annual wildebeest migration and it’s well worth having a quick investigation as to where the animals will be when you’re travelling. You won’t want to miss it, as it’s one of the most recognised animal migrations in the world. The Northern Circuit is also perfect for novice travellers; there is plenty to see and do, and with many other safari-goers, you’ll feel safer. Plus, some of the accommodation in the area is wonderful. Think luxury tents and sumptuous lodges with all the amenities you’d expect from a five start hotel.
2. The Southern Circuit safari is aimed more towards the seasoned traveller looking for something outside the typical safari experience – you may never be able to visit the Serengeti enough, but you probably won’t mind some variety after a while. Plus, if you’re after seclusion and privacy, you’ll find plenty of that here. There are usually far fewer game vehicles in the area, which makes for a more intimate safari experience. The circuit usually heads on through the Selous, Ruaha and Saadani reserves. You’ll also find that there are many more varied safaris this way; you can switch from a game vehicle and instead go for boat trips, fly camping, and walking safaris.
3. Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro is probably only a possibility for the fittest amongst us but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t aim for it. Kilimanjaro is the tallest free standing mountain the world and straddles the border of Kenya and Tanzania; you can spot it from over one hundred miles away. It’s one of the world’s most accessible tall mountains and even if you have no experience, you’ll find you can head up it with the help of a guide and team in about five days to accommodate your chances of altitude sickness. If you’ve always dreamed of roughing it and climbing a really humongous mountain, Kilimanjaro is the place to do it.
4. Enjoy your last days on a beach at Zanzibar, the islands which surround Tanzania. A relaxing beach stay is perfect after a busy few days on safari. Many lodges on the islands are eco friendly and locally sustainable, which makes visiting them a fantastic and wise choice to give back a little after flying. They’re also remote, giving you that Robison Crusoe feel perfect for a romantic getaway or a honeymoon.
